Shodō (書道), Japanese calligraphy, is the art of writing characters with a brush and ink. But the word "writing" does not do it justice. Shodō is a performance that you record in a single breath and cannot undo. Once the brush, full of ink, touches the soft paper, you cannot correct the stroke or go over it again. What remains is a lasting trace of the writer's control, rhythm and state of mind.

The way of writing

Like ikebana and the tea ceremony, calligraphy is a -dō (道), a "way." It is a lifelong discipline that people follow to grow as persons as much as to create beauty. Calligraphy came from China together with the writing system itself. Over more than a thousand years, Japan refined it and gave it a spirit of its own. Elegant flowing styles grew up, for example, to suit kana, the Japanese syllable scripts. Children still learn calligraphy at school, where it goes by the name shūji. Adults practise it as an art. Great works of calligraphy hang in tea rooms and temples. There a single fine line of brushwork can set the mood of a whole space.

The four treasures

Calligraphers work with the Four Treasures of the Study. These are the brush (筆, fude), the ink (墨, sumi), the inkstone (硯, suzuri) where you grind the ink, and the paper (washi). You rub a solid stick of ink with water against the stone. This slow, calming ritual prepares the mind as much as the ink. Styles range from clear, block-like kaisho to flowing gyōsho. At the far end lies wild, almost abstract sōsho, or "grass script," where characters melt into pure movement. The brush records every pause and every burst of energy. That is why calligraphy has deep ties to Zen Buddhism. Some of the most admired works are single characters that monks brushed in one charged, unbroken movement.

Words & idioms to take away

Idioms & proverbs to carry away

  • 書道: 書 ("writing") + 道 ("way"), the way of writing. It means calligraphy as an art of reflection, not just neat handwriting.
  • 文房四宝 (bunbō shihō): the "Four Treasures of the Study," brush, ink, inkstone and paper. Calligraphers all over East Asia share these basic tools.
