The Japanese Bath

Le bain japonais  ·  ofuro

お風呂
Steam rising from a wooden bathtub beside a snowy window, woodblock print

The Japanese bath, or ofuro (お風呂), works in a way that surprises many visitors. You wash before you get into the tub, and the tub is only for soaking. You are already clean when you sink into the hot water. So the bathwater stays clean, and one family member after another can share it. In Japan, a bath is not about getting clean, because you do that first. It is about warmth, relaxation and rest.

Wash first, then soak

Japanese bathrooms suit exactly this. The whole room can get wet. You sit on a low stool at a shower or tap next to the tub. There you wash and rinse off every trace of soap. Only then, perfectly clean, do you climb into the tub (湯船, yubune). It is deep and short, and very hot water fills it up to your shoulders. No dirt or soap gets into the tub, so the water stays clean. That way the next person can use it, and the person after that. A lid keeps the water warm between baths. A reheat button (追い焚き, oidaki) can warm the same water up again.

The evening ritual

For many people, the ofuro is the quiet high point of the day. An evening soak in deep, hot water melts away the cold and the tiredness of work before bed. The shared family bath gave Japanese one of its warmest ideas, hadaka no tsukiai, or "naked friendship." It means the open closeness that comes from bathing together. The home bath is the everyday cousin of the onsen, the natural hot spring, and of the sentō, the public bathhouse. All three follow the same ritual: wash first, soak after. And all three share the same deep love of hot water.

Words & idioms to take away

Idioms & proverbs to carry away

  • 湯船 / 湯舟 (yubune): the bathtub itself, literally "hot-water boat." 湯 (yu) is the all-important word for hot water.
  • 追い焚き (oidaki): the "reheat" function that warms the same bathwater back up. With it, a whole family can bathe one after another without refilling the tub.
