The genkan (玄関) is the entrance area just inside the front door of a Japanese home. It sits a step lower than the rest of the house. Here you take off your shoes before you step up into the living space. The genkan is small, but it is one of the most important borders in Japanese life. It marks the exact line where the outside world ends and the clean, private home begins.

Where shoes come off

The genkan floor lies one step below the floor of the house. You come in, take off your shoes (靴, kutsu) while you stand on the lower level, and step up onto a raised wooden edge, the agarikamachi (上がり框). Usually you put on slippers (スリッパ) there. Taking off your shoes is not optional politeness but a firm rule. Shoes carry the dirt of the street, and wearing them inside would truly offend your hosts. By custom, you then turn your shoes to face the door and line them up neatly, ready for the way out.

Inside and outside

The genkan reflects an idea that runs deep in Japanese culture. It is the border between soto, the outside world, and uchi, the inside, your home and your own people. Every time you cross it, you leave public life behind and enter a protected private space. The etiquette goes further inside the house. Many homes and traditional inns keep separate toilet slippers for the bathroom only, and you swap them back at its door. A classic, embarrassing mistake is to forget and walk back to the dinner table in toilet slippers. The genkan is also where the family greets guests. Sometimes it is also where they deal with short visits and never invite the caller further in.
